Rethink Green 2012

. April 9, 2012.

In some places it's harder than others to make an environmentally-friendly change, but we live in a community filled with progressive people and businesses looking to make a difference. Here are some of our green leaders.

Dragons Lair

5301 Jackson Rd.

Dragons Lair is the oldest futon and mattress store in the USA and continues to sell high-quality, American-made and environmentally-friendly products. The 29-year-old business strives to be green with  platform beds in non-toxic finishes, affordable organic comforters, sheets, pillows, matt pads, towels and an American Co-Futon without fire retardant chemicals — they have never been more proud of their selection.

The Humane Society of Huron Valley

3100 Cherry Hill Rd.
(734) 662-5585

It is estimated that nearly 12 million animals will end up in shelters across
the county in 2012 and we all know, based on the statistics, that many others will simply be abandoned to fend for themselves. Research shows that pet owners live longer, happier lives than non-pet owners so "Go Green", be happy and adopt a recycled pet from HSHV.

Westside Farmers Market

2501 Jackson Ave.

The Westside Farmers Market is opening for its seventh season in the parking lot of Zingerman’s Roadhouse, (at the intersection of Jackson and Maple Roads). Whether you travel by bus, car, or personal propulsion; the Westside Farmers’ Market wants to use its convenient location to welcome you, connect you with your neighbors, and enhance the quality of your life.  Hosting education from Washtenaw County Department of Health, Bridge Cards, Double Up Food Bucks, and high quality locally grown produce and meats enriches the festival atmosphere into an opportunity for personal growth.  Live music bolsters the spirit every week. Chef demonstrations feed the soul.  Bask in the sun, and learn about the food you are putting on your table from any of our thirty vendors. Our market is “producer only” which means each vendor, farmer or artisan, can tell you the exact history of their product. Thursdays 3-7pm:

Treasure Mart

529 Detroit St.

Since 1960 The Treasure Mart has been committed to recycling and reuse. Selling and buying at our store means that dollars spent here will go back into the local community. Imagine the thousands of wonderful items that have found new homes since we opened. We are looking forward to seeing you soon!

Habitat For Humanity

170 Aprill Drive, Suite A

This Earth Day, go green by supporting the Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley ReStore. Drive & Donate! We accept gently used cabinets, windows, doors, lighting, plumbing, electrical fixtures, furniture, appliances, architectural salvage items, tools, lawn and garden items, household items, televisions, paint, painting supplies, hardware, home décor, and more. By donating to the ReStore, you are diverting over 200 tons of materials from landfills per year. Stop & Shop! We sell all of these items at 50-75% off of their retail prices to the public, seven days a week. Drop off your old electronics for free recycling as well! By shopping at the ReStore, you are reusing and recycling all of these materials, and reducing your carbon footprint.

University Musical Society

Burton Memorial Tower
881 N. University Ave.

From efforts to re-use and recycle program books and willingness to carpool on our luxury coaches from Oakland County, the patrons of UMS have shown that a commitment to the arts and a commitment to the environment can go hand in hand. Joshua Bell and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields will receive the 2012 UMS Distinguished Artist Award in a brief ceremony as part of the season-ending concert on Sunday, April 22 at 4 pm in Hill Auditorium. UMS will offer luxury coach transportation from Oakland County to Ann Arbor for this performance.  Round-trip cost is only $10 per person!

Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop

2280 S. Industrial Highway

The Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop makes it easy to be "green". Donations of sellable items provide inventory to the non-profit resale shop on S. Industrial Hwy. Items are resold, generating funding for AAPS students. Restrictions on acceptable donations help reduce waste initially. Then, once items are accepted, the “Waste Knot” Award-winner sells, reuses, or recycles them. These green choices keep costs lower and school funding higher.

People’s Food Co-op

216 N. 4th Ave.

One good deed you can do for the planet is making sure your food doesn’t travel too far to get to your plate. Celebrating our 40th anniversary, the People’s Food Co-op continues our commitment to bringing you hometown favorites from local heroes such as Clancy’s Fancy, The Brinery, Mindo Chocolate, a host of area farms and more.

saajtak featured among a genre defying lineup at blind pig – sept 13

Genres are irrelevant. No one proves that assertion better than Detroit’s saajtak. Formed five years ago at U-M’s School of Music, saajtak’s made quite an impression with their stormy fusion of free jazz, noise experimentation, electronica, space-rock and opera. Their newest EP, Hectic, came out earlier this summer. Hectic EP by saajtak Thurs, Sept 13 saajtak
