Ann Arbor’s Hash Bash 2021 will Roll Up with Great Cannabis Speakers and Celebrities

Hash Bash is set to return this year with quite a few surprises. Here’s the who, what, when, where, and why of this year’s event.

Ann Arbor’s Hash Bash is the longest-running cannabis legalization rally in the country. Dating back to 1972, Ann Arbor’s Hash Bash has become a trademark event held every year. The event originally served as a protest against the Controlled Substance Act. This year, Hash Bash will be returning at High Noon on April 3.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Ann Arbor’s Hash Bash. Although last year was canceled due to COVID, this year the event plans to go virtual. Everyone will be able to participate virtually and listen to the awesome speakers, which consists of athletes, entertainers, canna-celebrities, and politicians.

The show will be online and will have a variety-show-style production. The event is completely free to the public. Those interested taking part in the event can tune in via Twitch. Twitch is normally a video game streaming platform but has moved to help additional shows stream since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s Hash Bash will feature a broad range of speakers. The Hash Bash’s Master of Ceremonies is former Fox News anchor Anqunette “Q” Sarfoh, but other awesome Michigan voices will come and speak during the event. Prominent voices in the cannabis community speaking include:

  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer
  • Attorney General Dana Nessel
  • Congresswoman Debbie Dingell
  • Senator Jeff Irwin
  • Hall of Fame football player Clavin Johnson
  • Stanley Cup winner and Red Wings player Darren McCarty
  • Former Detroit Tiger Joel Zumaya
  • Basketball great and cannabis entrepreneur Al Harrington
  • Michigan musical royalty Laith Al-Saaid
  • Longtime Michigan performance Tom Wall

The event will focus on the acknowledgments, both big and small, that we’ve made with cannabis legalizations. But there will also be a focus on the need for federal legalization and repairing the harms inflicted by the war on drugs. The 2021 Hash Bash Committee is working with businesses to make this broadcast successful and proceeds will go to benefit two charities designated by the Bash: the John Sinclair Foundation and the Michigan Cannabis Prisoner Freedom Fund.

A number of factors went into the decision to move Hash Bash from being an in-person event to a virtual one. The concern about the new variant of COVID-19 was a primary pusher for this change. Additionally, the identification of the variant on the University of Michigan’s campus played a big part in the decision. Hosting the event virtually will ensure the safety of our community and everyone involved in the event.

The Hash Bash Livestream is scheduled to last several hours and will begin at the traditional High Noon on Saturday, April 3. Entertainment will be provided by notable Michigan musicians, such as Tom Wall and Laith Al-Saadi. There will also be performances by cannabis enthusiast and drag queen, Laganja Estranja.

In addition to politicians and celebrities, notable cannabis activists, personalities, and other drug policy reform organizers will be making an appearance. To name a few, Decriminalize Nature A2, Rick Thompson and the Social Revolution, Jazz Cabbage Cafe, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, The Redemption Foundation, National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, and more will be making an appearance.

Those interested in the event should be sure to tune in to the Hash Bash Twitch channel at High Noon on April 3!
