Martin Luther King Jr. said in his 1963 book, Strength to Love, “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of convenience and comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday January 17, 2002 and we’ve rounded up several ways that local Washtenaw County residents can grow through learning and also celebrate the holiday throughout the next week.

Ann Arbor District Library
The Ann Arbor District Library has a series of videos planned for Monday, January 17 to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. In His Own Words is a collection of quotes from speeches, articles, and correspondences that MLK delivered throughout his life.
AADL is highlighting one hand-drawn quote at the top of each hour from 10 am to 8 pm featured at aadl.org/mlk with a little bit of historical context around each quote, including links to learn more.
AADL will also publish a new episode of its podcast Body of Work, focusing on the life’s work of MLK. Body of work is available wherever you get your podcasts, or at aadl.org/bodyofwork.

University of Detroit Mercy celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.
University of Detroit Mercy is commemorating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a pair of events in mid-January.
Thursday January 20, 2022 12:45pm – 2:00pm
Alex Zamalin, associate professor of Political Science and director of the African American Studies program at Detroit Mercy, and a student panel will discuss King’s legacy in a webinar. Register in advance HERE..
Tuesday January 25, 2022 4:30pm – 6:30pm
Students and employees can create their own African mask for an arts and crafts contest in the McNichols Campus Library.
The University will also celebrate Black History Month with a variety of events throughout February.
