Minstrels fill the lanes with merry Celtic tunes while noble steeds thunder across the jousting field. Around every bend wander fairies, pirates, queens, Vikings, jesters, and townsfolk who greet all travelers as if the sixteenth century had never ended.
For generations of Michiganders, the Michigan Renaissance Festival has become more than a seasonal outing—it is a cherished pilgrimage into a realm where history, fantasy and merriment reign.
Now celebrating its 47th season, the festival returns to Holly from August 22 through October 4, welcoming guests with beloved traditions and a host of new adventures that invite every visitor to become part of the kingdom’s unfolding tale.
Where every lane holds a tale
Though fresh attractions grace the village this season, it is the people of Hollygrove who breathe life into its streets.
From dawn until dusk, musicians, magicians, comedians, acrobats, storytellers and swordsmen entertain upon stages scattered throughout the realm. Roaming performers delight passersby with unscripted encounters, ensuring no two journeys are ever alike.
One moment, you may find yourself in conversation with Her Majesty the Queen. The next, a mischievous fool has enlisted your aid in some impossible quest, or a wandering bard offers a ballad in your honor.
Then comes the tournament.
Thrice each day, armored knights lower their lances and charge toward glory in full-contact jousts that have become the festival’s crowning spectacle. Nearby, master falconers display hawks, owls, and falcons in the celebrated Birds of Prey exhibition, honoring one of history’s oldest noble pursuits.
The Renaissance itself marked a great flowering of art, science, literature and discovery between the 14th and 17th centuries.

The French word Renaissance means “rebirth,” reflecting Europe’s renewed fascination with the wisdom of ancient Greece and Rome. Born in Italy, this remarkable era spread across the continent, transforming civilization through creativity and learning.

What has allowed the Michigan Renaissance Festival to flourish for nearly half a century is its continual delight in surprising even its most faithful patrons.
This year’s kingdom unveils several new adventures.
Young apprentices may fashion enchanted keepsakes at the Wizard Wand Workshop, while daring souls can undertake Cobweb’s Curse, an immersive quest that transforms guests into heroes within a medieval mystery.
Those seeking a more leisurely diversion may enjoy Ales & Artistry, where painting and spirited refreshments combine for an afternoon worthy of the village tavern.
Also making its debut is Heiðrún’s Hall, a gathering place inspired by Viking legend, where tales of Norse mythology accompany hearty fellowship and cups of mead served in surroundings fit for ancient warriors.
Opening weekend also heralds the inaugural Race for the Crown, inviting fleet-footed travelers to complete either a 5K or one-mile course before the kingdom officially opens its gates.
Such additions reflect a growing desire among visitors not merely to witness the festivities, but to step into the story themselves.
Come with a hearty appetite
Ask any seasoned festival goer what feast they seek first, and the answer is likely swift: the mighty turkey leg.
The famed smoked delicacy has become nearly as legendary as the festival itself, yet it shares the table with Scotch eggs, giant pretzels, roasted corn, savory meat pies, crisp pickles, fresh pastries, candied nuts, hearty pub fare and sweets enough to satisfy any wandering soul.
Adults may sample meads of many varieties, from richly spiced blends to sweeter honeyed offerings.
For those wishing to elevate the feast, specialty experiences include the Pub Crawl, Cocktail Crawl, Brunch at the Joust, and the grand Feast of Fantasy, where dining and theatrical revelry become one.
A marketplace of master craftsmen
Unlike common fairs where wares simply change hands, the Michigan Renaissance Festival celebrates the enduring art of craftsmanship.
Hundreds of artisans demonstrate blacksmithing, leatherworking, woodworking, glassblowing, jewelry making and other traditional trades while offering handcrafted treasures seldom found elsewhere.
Whether in search of a hand-thrown mug, a finely bound leather journal, medieval attire, or a keepsake born of fantasy, the marketplace rewards every curious wanderer.
More than fine garments
Though splendid costumes often capture the eye, no traveler need don doublet or gown to feel welcome.
Some spend months fashioning historically inspired attire worthy of the royal court, while others arrive clad in everyday garments. Within Hollygrove, all become fellow citizens of the realm.
The festival has long embraced the notion that imagination belongs to all ages. Children may be knighted, delight in puppet shows, encounter woodland fairies, craft keepsakes, or test their skills in games fit for young squires and maidens.
New this season, Celebration Ribbons allow guests marking birthdays, anniversaries, first visits and other joyful milestones to wear colorful ribbons throughout the day, inviting cheerful greetings from performers and fellow revelers alike.
