Local Cover Band Performs Throughout Southeast Michigan

Local cover band spark performs groovy upbeat music that gets people moving on the dance floor. They formed in the summer of 2018.

They are known for playing crowd-pleasers and a lot of pop/rock hits from the ‘80s, such as favorites from the Talking Heads, Blondie, the Clash, the B52s, Cheap Trick and Elvis Costello. Motown and classic rock can also be found on the spark playlist.

“We pick songs that we enjoy playing and try to make sure we each get a chance to shine at some point in the evening,” lead singer Robin Grant said.

Some current fan favorites include: “Love Shack” by the B52s, “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, “Take on Me” by A-ha, “Shattered” by the Rolling Stones and “Peace of Mind” by Boston.

“People frequently tell us how much they like our playlist,” Grant said.

The band consists of Robin Grant on lead vocals, Jim Weyman on drums and vocals, Josh Killom on guitar and vocals and Jeremy Storer on bass and vocals. All the band members are local residents.

“I’m originally from Charlotte and lived in Ann Arbor for about 35 years before moving to Chelsea in February 2023,” Grant said.

Weyman is originally from Milan, lived in Ann Arbor for years, and recently moved back to Milan. Guitarist Josh is originally from Ann Arbor and now lives in Pinckney. Bassist Jeremy is originally from the Toledo area and now lives in Ypsilanti.

The band plays at various local locations including LIVE and Zal Gaz Grotto. At an energetic show at Zal Gaz, Grant even played the kazoo.

One might wonder what the meaning of the band’s name is.

Grant shared, “There’s no particular meaning to the name, but I wanted something that was short and easy to spell and remember that would hopefully convey a feeling of fun, and I like the association of activating or energizing people.”

Spark’s music ignites people to have a good time and move around.

“We play mainly happy, mostly up-tempo, highly danceable music,” Grant said.

They do not currently have a website, but you can find out more about where and when they are playing on their Facebook page.

Upcoming shows include:

Friday, March 1 at Valiant Bar & Grill in Chelsea

Saturday, April 6 at the Zal Gaz Grotto Club in Ann Arbor

Friday, April 26 at 308 Brass Rail in Jackson

Saturday, May 11 at Unity Vibration in Ypsilanti
