There is something comforting about a restaurant built around family stories. Before guests even take their first bite at The Stubborn Brother Pizza Bar, they are introduced to a tradition that stretches back generations—one rooted in hard work, hospitality and a stubborn commitment to doing things the right way.

The newest Ann Arbor location of The Stubborn Brother Pizza Bar brings the Mancy family’s longtime restaurant experience from Toledo to the heart of the city’s South Main district in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. The restaurant, located inside The Standard development housing, offers a lively combination of New York-style pizza, classic Italian-American favorites, a full bar and a welcoming atmosphere designed for everything from casual dinners to game-day gatherings.
The name itself reflects the family’s personality. The Stubborn Brother is built around the idea of being “stubbornly” committed—stubbornly fresh, stubbornly clean and stubbornly honest. That philosophy comes from generations of restaurant ownership and a desire to preserve the personal connections that make neighborhood restaurants special.
A family recipe for success
The Ann Arbor location is led by fourth-generation restaurateur Grace Mancy, who represents a new chapter in a family story that began more than a century ago. While many restaurants come and go, the Mancy family has maintained a lasting presence in the Toledo dining scene by adapting to changing tastes while holding onto quality and hospitality.

That balance is evident throughout The Stubborn Brother. The restaurant feels contemporary and energetic while still embracing the familiar comfort of an old-fashioned pizza parlor — a place where friends gather, families share meals, and students can find a relaxed spot near campus.
Pizza at the center of the experience
The star of the menu is, naturally, the pizza. The restaurant specializes in New York-style thin-crust pies with a crisp foundation, generous toppings and a balance of classic flavors. Guests can choose from specialty pizzas or build their own creations.

Favorites include meat-heavy options, vegetable-forward combinations, white pizzas, and inventive specialty pies. Beyond pizza, the menu expands into Italian-American comfort food with options such as garlic rolls, wings, salads, subs, stromboli, pasta dishes and desserts.
The variety makes The Stubborn Brother accessible for different dining occasions. A group can share several pizzas, while individual diners can enjoy a classic meal without committing to an entire pie.
On our family trip to The Stubborn Brother, we enjoyed a memorable sampling of the menu, including the very saucy and cheesy meatballs, grilled wings, an arugula salad, the Supreme Pizza and cannolis for dessert. The homemade-style meatballs were a standout—generously topped with rich sauce and melted cheese, they were hearty enough to be a meal all on their own. The wings had the unmistakable character of an outdoor grill, with a garlic butter flavor and creative taste that made them feel unique.

The arugula salad embraced simplicity, combining fresh greens with nuts, shaved Parmesan, black pepper, and a flavorful vinaigrette that allowed each ingredient to shine. The Supreme Pizza arrived impressively large—practically stretching across the table—with a perfectly balanced crust and a satisfying combination of savory meats and fresh vegetables. We finished the evening with delicate cannolis in both pistachio and chocolate chip varieties, a sweet and elegant ending to the meal. From start to finish, everything felt thoughtfully prepared and top-notch, making The Stubborn Brother a welcome addition to Ann Arbor’s dining scene.
A new gathering place on South Main
With its spacious dining room, full-service bar, and numerous televisions, The Stubborn Brother is clearly designed as a social destination. It has the energy of a sports bar but maintains the warmth of a family restaurant.
The location also adds another reason to explore the changing South Main neighborhood, an area that continues to grow with new residences, businesses and dining options.
In a community filled with independent restaurants and longtime favorites, The Stubborn Brother enters Ann Arbor with something valuable: a history. It is not simply a new pizza place; it is the continuation of a family tradition and an invitation to gather around the table.
After all, some things are worth being stubborn about—fresh ingredients, welcoming hospitality, and the simple pleasure of sharing a great pizza with people you enjoy.
