Chelsea Hospital invested approximately $11 million into expanding its facilities for patients recovering from serious medical conditions in its Adult Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit.
The expansion increased the space’s capacity from 24 to 40 beds and enhanced the ability to serve patients.
Von Lozon, Senior Communications Specialist with Trinity Health Michigan, said the Unit was funded through the joint venture agreement between Trinity Health Michigan and Michigan Medicine.
Lozon said the updated unit began admitting patients on September 20.
Trauma, stroke, brain injuries, neurological diseases, spinal cord injuries, cancer, amputation, cardiac and pulmonary conditions and organ transplants are just some of the serious medical conditions being treated.
The changes also centralize the acute rehabilitation services connected to advanced academic and research by the University of Michigan Health.

They are already receiving positive feedback from patients.
“Overall, the upgraded rehab unit has received positive feedback so far,” Lozon said. “Our patients, specifically, have loved the windows and seeing nature outside.”
“They have also enjoyed the brand new spaces as well,” Lozon said. “Finally, patients are so grateful for the extremely experienced rehab physicians and therapy staff who are helping them reach their goals.”
Chelsea Hospital President Ben Miles also released a prepared statement about the new addition.
“The new Adult Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit allows us to deliver more cohesive and integrated care, not only to our immediate neighbors in Chelsea and surrounding communities but to patients throughout Michigan,” Miles said. “This expansion and the investments we’ve made make Chelsea Hospital a destination for rehabilitative care. I’d like to thank Trinity Health’s joint venture partner, U-M Health, for playing such a crucial role in this and for fostering a supportive, collaborative environment for our care teams at Chelsea Hospital.”
