A Night Out for Curious Minds: Inside Ann Arbor’s Nerd Nite

On the second Thursday of each month in Ann Arbor, a crowd gathers not for a traditional lecture, but for something far livelier. Nerd Nite, hosted by Ann Arbor District Library (AADL), in partnership with LIVE, blends intellectual curiosity with a relaxed, social atmosphere—complete with drinks, laughter and conversation.

Emily Murphy, a librarian at the Ann Arbor District Library and one of Nerd Nite’s organizers and emcees, stepped into the role in 2022 as the event returned from its pandemic hiatus.

“When I started at AADL in 2022, it was just as Nerd Nite was coming back from its Covid hiatus, so it was a natural time to transition me in as an organizer and emcee,” she said.

Not your typical lecture

At its core, Nerd Nite offers short, engaging talks—but the experience feels nothing like a classroom.

“Nerd Nite is an excellent evening out for someone who wants to learn, laugh and feel connected to other curious community members,” Murphy explained. Speakers with enthusiasm and varying levels of expertise give 15-minute talks on a wide range of topics. Because the setting is a nightclub…and the audience often has a drink or two, it gives a more casual and conversational atmosphere.”

That shift in tone makes a difference. “There’s actual learning that’s taking place, but it’s coupled with entertainment. It’s a night out, not a lecture!” she added.

Why the formula works

The combination of humor, expertise and a relaxed setting allows speakers to bring their full personalities to the stage.

“I think the more casual atmosphere of Nerd Nite allows the speakers’ enthusiasm freer rein,” Murphy said. “When we have a scientist presenting on their research, they don’t need to give us the buttoned-up, jargon-y overview that might be expected if they were presenting to their peers. Instead, they can geek out about ‘isn’t this process COOL?!’ and that excitement…passes on to the audience.”

Unexpected topics, memorable moments

Part of Nerd Nite’s appeal lies in its unpredictability. Topics range from the deeply scientific to the delightfully bizarre—and often both at once.

“Last week, we had someone talking about the history of George Washington’s teeth… and I can’t stop thinking about it,” Murphy recalled. “Last summer, we had a presenter talk about the ‘Billboard bandits’… and it turned out, [an audience member] was!”

She also pointed to a standout storytelling talk: “A few years ago…we had a presenter…talk about how ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ breaks all the rules of storytelling, but still manages to be good, and that talk absolutely slayed me.”

A natural fit for Ann Arbor

In a city shaped by the University of Michigan and a strong culture of learning, Nerd Nite has found fertile ground.

“I consider myself so lucky to live and work in a community that has a culture of curiosity and learning, and that definitely makes it a natural place for a Nerd Nite to thrive,” Murphy said. She noted partnerships with student groups and the organic way speakers emerge: “Someone gives a talk, they invite their friends…We get a lot of people saying, ‘Oh, my spouse/coworker/best friend/dad would be a natural at this!’ And I say, ‘Invite them!’”

What makes a great speaker?

While expertise helps, it’s not the defining factor. Passion is.

“Enthusiasm and excitement about the topic is the #1 criteria for making a great Nerd Nite speaker,” Murphy said. “While expertise is obviously a great trait…that level of expertise can range from having multiple degrees in the subject to being the #1 fan of that Wikipedia page.”

A community experience

Each event draws a large audience—typically between 90 and 120 people—ranging from graduate students to retirees. Some come in groups, others alone, but all share a sense of curiosity.

“A topic of interest will bring someone to a Nerd Nite the first time, but it’s the atmosphere of Nerd Nite in general that keeps them coming back,” Murphy said. “Plus, the structure of the event…sets up easy socializing. On the break, why not talk with the person sitting next to you about the talk you just heard?”

Everyone belongs

For those hesitant about whether they’re “nerdy enough,” Murphy has a simple answer.

“Oh goodness, everyone is ‘nerdy’ about something!” she said. “If you’re curious, you belong at Nerd Nite. If you want to connect with others, you belong at Nerd Nite. If you want to go out at 7pm on a Thursday night, you belong at Nerd Nite.”

Always something new

Keeping the event fresh is a community effort. Speakers often come from the audience itself, along with local students, professionals and even people Murphy encounters in daily life.

“Interesting people make interesting speakers,” she said. “And I truly believe that most people are interesting—especially when they’re talking about something that lights them up!”

What’s next

The next Nerd Nite promises another eclectic lineup.

“On April 9, we’ve got talks lined up on Light Pollution, Black Holes, and Rabies!” Murphy said.

Nerd Nite takes place monthly at 7 p.m. at LIVE, at 102 S First St, typically on the second Thursday, with breaks in May and December and a special summer event at Top of the Park. For those looking for an evening that blends learning with laughter, it may be one of Ann Arbor’s most unique nights out.
