The Boro: Wood-Fired Pizza and Kid-Approved Fun

The yard adjacent to the high-end dining venue, The Dixboro Project, is a casual and family-friendly place to enjoy coffee, pizza, drinks and more. The Boro is open daily from 7 a.m.-10 p.m., allowing for a picnic anytime of day.

In the morning and during the day, The Boro is the perfect place to enjoy Roos Roast coffee and world-class baked goods such as croissants, muffins and scones.

For a heavier meal, try one of their decadent pizzas—served right to your picnic table. They also sell a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for guests to enjoy during their picnic.

Our family’s visit

The hay maze at The Boro.

We stopped at The Boro for dinner on a crisp fall Saturday evening. Though it was not very busy in the seating area, the wait time was still around 40 minutes. We anticipated this wait time and ordered ahead—which I’d recommend for anyone with hungry kids.

However, even if we had to wait, we would have been perfectly content hanging out in the pleasant atmosphere The Boro has curated.

Our trip to The Boro was right before Halloween, so the whole yard was decorated with big spooky skeletons, spider webs and pumpkins. Not only was it festively decorated, but there were also interactive elements for kids to enjoy. There was a wood see-saw, and a mini maze made of hay for little ones to run through. As the night went on, kids dressed in costumes were playing in the hay maze while parents watched and enjoyed their pizza. It was the perfect way to spend a fall evening with kids.

Even once the decorations come down after Halloween, The Boro is a destination that is worth the visit. I recommend it as a great place to bring family or friends who are in town to visit.

The pizza

Whether you eat in the yard or you take it home to enjoy, the wood-fired pizza at The Boro is excellent. We ordered a pepperoni, a mushroom and a kid’s cheese pizza. We were pleased to find out that the kids cheese pizza was the same size as the regular pizza.

The pepperoni pizza was filled with crispy pepperoni in every bite. The bianco di napoli tomatoes, pepperoni, basil, fior di latte and pecorino all complemented each other well to make a delicious and savory pie.

The stand-out for us was the mushroom pizza. It includes a fontina fondue base with mushrooms, rosemary and maple. At first, we were hesitant when we saw maple on the menu, but it ended up being our favorite element. With this pizza, you get the perfect bite of sweet and salty.

Want to make anything you order a little spicy? Try the chili oil. The chili oil was some of the best I have tried. They are very generous with their portions as well. We had enough to bring home to put on our leftovers.

The bottom line

The Boro is the kind of place you wish you knew about sooner. The pizza brings upscale flavors to a casual setting—a parent’s dream. Going out with kids can be tough, even if it is at a restaurant that has a kids meal. However, the interactive activities for kids at The Boro show that they value the families that come to visit. Plus, try to make a visit while they still have their decorations up!
