This year, Ypsilanti Meals On Wheels is celebrating its 50th birthday. With this milestone, they are also acknowledging the fact that this year, more Americans will turn 65 than in any other year. They have multiple events and efforts planned out this spring to celebrate and give back to the community.
With an aging crisis on the horizon, 24% of Michigan residents will be 60 and older by 2030 and by 2040, Washtenaw County seniors living in poverty will more than double.
At the beginning of this year, Ypsilanti Meals On Wheels launched the “Give More to Feed More” project to raise enough capital to fund an additional one million meals over the next five years.
During their anniversary year, Ypsilanti Meals On Wheels will be holding multiple community events including Pi(e) Day on Thursday, March 14 and Meals on Heels on Friday, April 26. Lemonade Lane pop-ups will also be at local events.
Pi(e) Day will take place at The Corner Brewery at noon. The schedule includes Pies & Pints, a meet and greed and a D&D livestream.
They will also be taking on the 50-Pie Challenge and presell 50 whole Zingerman’s Pies. Each pie is $50 and include flavors: pecan, rustic apple, jumbleberry, and key lime. Orders must be made by March 9 and picked up between 12-7pm on March 14 at the Corner Brewery.
