Michigan Olympians on Team USA Roundup

Athletes from around the state compete in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Out of nearly 3,000 athletes competing in the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games (225 from the United States), 19 have connections to Michigan. 

Some of the athletes representing Team USA were born and raised in Michigan, while others trained in the state. The University of Michigan is highly represented as many alumni and current students made the cut. 

Find your county and cheer on the Michigan athletes on Team USA this Olympic season.  The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games will run from February 4 – February 20, 2022.  Schedule and more information on the games can be found HERE.

Washtenaw County

Evan Bates: Figure skating (ice dancing)

Bates will be competing for his fourth year in the olympics. His hometown is Ann Arbor, Michigan where he graduated high school from Ann Arbor Huron. He is also a University of Michigan class of 2013 graduate. At 32 years old, he will be the first US skater of any discipline to compete in a total of four Winter Olympics. 

Matty Beniers: Hockey

Beniers is a forward for the University of Michigan ice hockey team. He is 19 years old and this is his first time in the Olympics. 

Brendan Brisson: Hockey

Twenty year old Brisson is a forward for the University of Michigan ice hockey team. This will be his first time competing in the Olympic Games. 

Steve Kampfer: Hockey

The 33 year old defenseman grew up in Jackson, Michigan and attended Jackson High School. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2010 after four years on the Michigan ice hockey team. This will be Kampfer’s first Olympics. 

Strauss Mann: Hockey

Goaltender Mann is 23 years old and will be competing at the Olympics for the first time this year. He is a senior on the University of Michigan ice hockey team.

Ryan Pivirotto: Speedskating (Short Track)

Pivirotto is a 26 year old Ann Arbor, Mich. native. This is his first time competing in the Olympics but second time qualifying because he was an alternate in 2018.

Oakland County

Jean-Luc Baker: Figure skating (ice dancing)

Baker moved to the United States from England when he was four years old. After high school he moved to the Detroit area and trained at the Detroit Skating Club. Currently, Baker is 28 years old and lives in Bloomfield Hills. 

Madison Chock: Figure Skating (Ice Dancing)

This will be 29 year old Chock’s third Olympics. She grew up in Novi, Mich. and attended Novi High School. She also attended Schoolcraft College. 

Kaitlyn Hawayek: Figure Skating (Ice Dancing)

Hawayek graduated from Troy Athens High School in 2014 and currently lives in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. She trained at the Detroit Skating Club. This is the 25 year old’s first Olympics.

Zoe Kalapos: Snowboarding (Women’s halfpipe)

Kalapos was born in Beverly Hills, Mich. Now 24 years old and in her first Olympics, she began snowboarding when she was 5 years old and living in Michigan. Eventually, Kalapos moved to Colorado to pursue the sport. 

Megan Keller: Hockey

Keller is 25 years old and already an Olympic gold medalist from when the U.S Olympic Team won in 2018. Her hometown is Farmington, Mich. and she attended North Farmington High School.

Pat Nagle: Hockey

Thirty-four year old Nagle grew up in Bloomfield Township, Mich. and attended Bloomfield Hills Lahser High School. In 2011, he graduated from Ferris State University. He played for the Grand Rapids Griffins for the 2014-15 season, 2018-19 season, 2019-20 season and 2020-21 season.

Wayne County

Andy Miele: Hockey

Miele is from Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. The 33 year old was a member of the Grand Rapids Griffins for the 2014-15 season.

Ingham County 

Madison Hubble: Figure Skating (Ice Dancing)

Hubble grew up in Okemos, Mich. and graduated from Laurel Springs High School in 2009. The 30 year old is a two-time Olympian. 

Zach Donohue: Figure Skating (Ice Dancing)

This 31 year-old two-time Olympian trains at Lansing Skating Club. He formerly trained at Detroit Skating Club.

Charlevoix County

Kaila Kuhn: Freestyle Skiing (Women’s aerials)

Competing in her first Olympic games, Kuhn is an 18 year old from Boyne City, Mich. She graduated from Boyne City High School in 2021. 

Iron County

Nick Baumgartner: Snowboarding (Men’s snowboard cross)

Forty-year old Baumgartner will be the oldest Team USA Olympian as he competes in his fourth Olympics. He grew up in Iron River, Mich. and graduated from West Iron County High School. 

Chippewa County 

Abby Roque: Hockey

Roque’s hometown is Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. and she attended Sault Area High School. This will be the 24 year old’s first Olympics. 

Otsego County

Winter Vinecki: Freestyle Skiing (Aerial)

Vinecki is a 23 year old from Gaylord Mich. She will be competing in the Olympic Games for the first time.
