Arthouse Revival at Michigan Theater in September

Total Recall, 9/3

Only in the 90s could a Paul Verhoven and Philp K. Dick collab come together with Schwarzenegger and Stone to make this over-the-top, sci-fi classic. A script by Ronald Shusett and Dan O’Bannon, who wrote the first, and best, two Alien movies together lend added street cred. Ronny Cox (Robocop, Beverly Hills Cop) and Michael Ironside (Scanners, Top Gun) make a great supporting cast.

Steel Magnolias, 9/5

A film about a young beautician, newly arrived in a small Louisiana town, who finds work at the local salon, where a small group of women share a close bond of friendship. An incredible lineup of powerhouse actresses including Shirley MacLaine, Sally Field, and Dolly Parton drew women everywhere to the movies for this one. Bring your bestie, a box of tissues, and remember Dolly – our national treasure.

Sing, FREE EVENT!, 9/6

Back to School, Michigan Theater Club, 9/6

The Michigan Theater’s Community Film Club returns once more with Back to School September! Welcoming back students, teachers, and lifelong learners in the Ann Arbor community to this school-themed film club meeting! The movie is still TBA. The social meet up from 6-7 is free, but the film post meet-up is a regularly ticketed movie. See The Michigan Theater website for details!

Mildred Pierce  9/8

Joan Crawford won her Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a hard-working mother who  divorces her husband and starts a successful restaurant business to support her spoiled daughter. Crawford is a tour-de-force, Ann Blythe is pure evil as the spoiled daughter, and Eve Arden is divine, stealing every scene she’s in – even with Crawford. A perfect blend of Noir and Melodrama – a must see.

Frank’s Drive In Double Feature, 9/12

The first event of its kind at Michigan Theater is destined to be the best event this month! Projectionist and author, Frank Uhle ,curates this trip to the classic era of drive-In cinema with a full evening of rare, original 35mm film prints! Along with a generous helping of vintage trailers and snack bar ads, we’ll screen two rarely seen features. The titles will remain a surprise until showtime, but the first is a wild ‘60s Sci-Fi flick and the second a spicy early ‘70s R-rated gem.

Cozy Craft Club – The Craft   9/23

The Cozy Craft Club continues this month with the movie baring its namesake, The Craft! Come in your pajamas and bring a friend. This is a relaxed evening where people can watch a movie or work on a craft or sewing project during the screening and spend time with friends.

Twin Peaks, Season Two, 9/6, 9/13, 9/20, 9/27

Head back to school with the class from Twin Peaks High as Michigan Theater continues its screenings of Twin Peaks with season two. The ultimate soap opera meets art house leaves the small screen for the big screen, where it always belonged. Grab a fine cup of coffee and revisit the twists and turns as we go back to the fall of 1990 when the country waited to find out who killed Laura Palmer. Every Sunday night two back-to-back episodes are screened, tickets can be bought individually or as a season pass on the theater’s website.
