Hoop Dreams, May 19, Michigan Theater, 7pm
One of the best documentaries ever made, Hoop Dreams follows two inner city Chicago boys determined to play in the NBA, from high school through college. Along the way, family, girlfriends, and physical injury become dramatic factors in success or failure, illustrating that talent is only part of the game. Just when you think you know where each boy is headed, everything changes. Don’t let the 2 hour and 50-minute run time dissuade you; this documentary has its audience invested and riveted from start to finish. Roger Ebert called Hoop Dreams “The best film about American life I’ve ever seen.” Presented in 35mm!

Lady Snowblood, May 22, Michigan Theater, 9:30pm
There are a few good samurai films playing this month (check the Michigan/State Theater listings for more), but Lady Snowblood is truly groundbreaking. The story: “a young woman trained from birth to be a deadly instrument of revenge against the swindlers who destroyed her family.” Heavily influenced by Tarantino’s Kill Bill movies, right down to some very specific fight scenes, it oozes cool. See it at least once.
