Arthouse/Revival Favorites at Michigan Theater in November

Wild At Heart, 4K Restoration, Now Playing, Michigan Theater

Director David Lynch won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for his 1990 film about two young lovers, Sailor and Lula, on the run from a cast of bizarre criminals that Lula’s controlling mother has sent to kill Sailor. Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern play the star-crossed lovers, while Dern’s real-life mother, Diane Ladd, plays her crazed control freak mother. Willem Dafoe, Harry Dean Stanton and Crispin Glover co-star. Presented in newly restored 4K!

Short films of David Lynch, 11/10, Michigan Theater

These films show Lynch’s earliest experimentation with the medium when he went from being primarily a painter to filmmaker starting with “Six Men Getting Sick” (1967) through his short films in the 1970s just prior to his feature, “Eraserhead.” This series also includes his return to short form in the 80s and 90s: “Premonitions Following an Evil Deed” (1995), “The Cowboy and the Frenchman” (1988), and ends with “Dumbland” in 2002. A fascinating look at the evolution of one of America’s greatest filmmakers — a must for students of film and fans of Lynch.

Paris Texas, 11/12, Michigan Theater

Writer Sam Shepard’s novel gets the Wim Wenders treatment in this award-winning film set in the American Southwest. A mysterious quasi-mute drifter, Travis, (magnificently played by Harry Dean Stanton) as he attempts to reconnect with his son, currently living with his brother in Los Angeles, and his missing wife (Nastassja Kinski). Touching on subjects of masculinity and the American family against the backdrop of desert canyons, crumbling towns, and neon signs, through the eyes of a German filmmaker — a classic of independent cinema.

Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me, 11/15,  Michigan Theater

Dissatisfied with the direction Twin Peaks took in its second season, where David Lynch had little creative control, Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me allowed him to better present his vision. A prequal to the TV series, it focuses on Laura Palmer’s decent into hell, her double life as high school student by day and self-destructive drug addict by night, leading to her murder. The star-studded cast include turns by David Bowie, Keifer Sutherland and Chris Issak. Moira Kelly, who had just starred in the great tv mini-series “Love, Lies, and Murder” with Sheryl Lee, takes over the role of Donna Hayward from Lara Flynn Boyle. While the film is both beautiful and emotionally brutal, its one of Lynch’s most compassionate treatments of his female lead characters.

Wings of Desire, 11/19, Michigan Theater

Director Wim Wenders’ gorgeous, poetic masterpiece about an angel, Bruno Ganz, who watches over the people of Berlin from atop buildings hearing their thoughts and feelings. He falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist which forces him to choose to become human to be with his true love or remain an angel. Made in 1989, not long before the fall of the Berlin wall, it’s considered one of the most beautiful films of Wenders, or any others’ careers. One to see in a theater!

In German and English, with English subtitles.
