Tips, Tricks, and Tokes: a Cannabis Halloween

It’s Halloween! The air is cooling, the trees are brilliant, and the crunch of leaves underfoot would gladden any heart.

If you’re a cannabis connoisseur, maybe you’re wondering how to incorporate cannabis into your Halloween parties while abiding by Ann Arbor and UoM campus laws.

Or maybe you’re curious about getting high but avoiding the classic paranoia that can accompany certain strains of cannabis. Or maybe you want to throw a party with infused treats, or make your costume a cannabis-themed one!
We’ve got you.

Getting high (not paranoid) around Halloween

Weed hits everyone differently. But usually, it’s strains that are high in THC that are the common culprits in paranoia. THC in high doses can cause anxiety and an elevated heart rate. CBD works harmoniously with THC, and brings a calming influence. So a strain with low CBD and high THC is more likely to make you paranoid.

To get a more relaxed experience, start off slow with a microdose, and make sure you’re looking at a balanced CBD to THC ratio.

Infusing your treats and beverages at a party.

When you’re hosting a party and want to offer infused treats, make sure to carefully label whatever you’re infusing so guests have full awareness.

Easy ways to infuse baked goods is by making cannabutter (infusing butter with decarbed cannabis), cannabis milk (simmering ground cannabis and milk together), making cannabis-infused olive oil, or getting a tincture (this is great for precise dosing).

Baked goods that are great for infusing include brownies, cookies and cakes. You can also make infused caramel apples and banana bread by replacing the butter with cannabutter, or a charcuterie board with an infused olive oil to drizzle on the cheese.

Drinks that go well with cannabis include infusing apple cider (with a tincture or with homemade infused simple syrup), punch, or hot chocolate.

If you’re bringing treats to another person’s party, check with the host that they’re okay with infused treats, and make especially sure to clearly label them.

Cannabis themed costumes

Let’s up our costume game and explore some fun costume ideas!

  • Pot Leaf: Use a green bodysuit and paint a cannabis leaf on your face, or cut one out of foam as a headpiece.
  • The Dude (from The Big Lebowski): a White Russian glass, a plaid bathrobe, shorts, and sunglasses.
  • Keep it subtle: add fishnet stockings with the cannabis leaf on them to any regular costume.
  • Movie characters, like Craig and Smokey or Cheech and Chong. Dig deep into weed-inspired movie costumes here!

Keep it legal, keep it safe.

Now for the boring but still very important part: enjoying cannabis while keeping things legal!

Yes, weed is legal in Michigan if you’re over 21 and abide by possession laws; no, it is not legal anywhere on campus. UofM complies with federal laws regarding cannabis.

An off-campus party? Fair game! You can carry up to 2.5 ounces in public, can’t consume in public, and need the owner’s permission to consume on someone’s private property. It is okay to consume outside if you have a private backyard.
