420 is cannabis culture slang for consuming cannabis. The term was coined in the 1970s and has only grown in popularity since then. April 20 is now an international counterculture holiday celebrating cannabis and often calling for its legalization.
To celebrate this April, here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy cannabis in Ann Arbor!
Check-in on local laws.
Remember, public consumption is still illegal, and you need to be 21+ to enjoy. You can’t consume in a car or on a Michigan road, regardless of if you’re driving or not. You also can’t drive under the influence.
You can smoke on private property, but not where people can see you. So if you have a back yard and a front yard, then smoke in the back yard. You can consume at a state park! But you need to be in your tent or your camper.
Explore nature
If you have a designated driver, there’s no better place to enjoy a high than around nature. Ann Arbor is full of beautiful, scenic places to be after you smoke a joint or enjoy an edible–think Bird Hills, Nichols Arboretum Loop or the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Spending time outside boosts mental health and encourages connection with nature. Cannabis can intensify the positive effects of being outdoors.

Visit Ann Arbor’s first cananbis microbusiness
Winewood Organics, an independent family-owned microbusiness catering to all adults, has three grow rooms where they grow their organic cannabis. Check out their taster box or their rotating menu. They also do tours!
A night-in
Who says you have to go out to celebrate? Pop over to a dispensary to get your fav flower or edible and then enjoy cannabis from the comfort of your own home! Invite over some friends for a movie, or build a fire in your backyard. Just remember, you can consume on private property, but you need to not be visible from the public—so you need to be in your backyard, not the front.
