“Mavens and Mocktails—interviews with inspirational women.” As soon as I heard the name of this event, it caught my attention. It’s hosted by The Sky, whose official mission is to empower women and girls to pursue their goals with passion and integrity.
“When we initially started The Sky,” said Kate Henson, one of the organizers, “we thought, there’s so much on a women’s plate, and we typically push ourselves to the bottom of the list. How can we help women check things off their list that are important and should be done, but they don’t have the time?”
Mavens and Mocktails features an in-person interview and a Q&A, and is followed by a facilitated social activity.
Henson, along with fellow organizers Jane and Angela, already organized a variety of workshops for women, but wanted to do more than just workshops. “For Mavens and Mocktails,” said Henson, “We’re looking for women who can contribute and help other women succeed, and create community within a community.”
They wanted to create an event where women could get together, have fun, and also learn from meaningful speakers who will shed light on something new by sharing their impactful stories.

“We didn’t want it to be a stodgy networking thing, because that’s awkward and uncomfortable,” said Henson. “We are highlighting people in our community. Women can’t change the world by themselves: community building is a huge part of this. We wanted to make sure we were finding joy too, and that’s when Mavens and Mocktails became real.”
The inaugural Mavens and Mocktails event was in March, and the next events are in April and June.
As a new event, Henson said they would love it if people reached out to them and let them know about women who are actively contributing to the community that people aren’t fully aware of, so the good work they are doing could be shared.
Henson said the most feedback they’ve gotten from any of The Sky’s events so far was at the Mavens and Mocktails event. “People were blown away by the speaker’s story and really connected to it,” she said. “Everyone had a great time.”
Their next event, Thursday April 9 at Zou Zou’s Café in Chelsea, is from 7-8:30pm and you can get tickets here.
