Alison Albrecht has been added to the University of Michigan’s famous alumni list despite graduating just last year. Albrecht is currently competing on NBC’s hit show “The Voice.” The program focuses on bringing talented artists together and putting them on a team led by one of four famous singers and songwriters.
“Every single person I’ve ever known would see this audition and I think it pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way, it really scared me,” she said. “When I was on that stage I felt such bliss and joy […] really gave it my all because the stakes were really high for this one.”
Albrecht was chosen by Reba McIntyre who is often referred to as “the queen of country.”
“I knew that if somebody turns, no matter how many people turned, you’re on the show and that’s what first came into my head then I thought ‘oh my god don’t stop singing,’” Albrecht said, commenting on when Reba signaled that she wanted to coach Albrecht by turning her chair on the show. “I also then had a thought go through my mind like, ‘no soak this up’ and I remember looking at the audience and my surroundings and being like, this is the only time this blind audition is going to happen in my life, and really tried to be present.”
Before joining “The Voice,” Albrecht was a student at the University of Michigan studying Biopsychology, Cognition and Neuroscience (BCN) Major. She graduated in 2022, then moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue her career in singing and songwriting. Albrecht has been performing since she was a child and spent time in the Ann Arbor music scene in addition to performing around Michigan.
“The fact that I’ve been able to be coached by Reba has just elevated my career in a way that I didn’t even know coming in,” she said. “So many more people know my music, are listening to my songs [since being on the show] and […] I really wanted more people to engage with the messages that I have to share.”
Albrecht describes McIntyre as being able to create a “safe space to grow.” In addition to working with McIntyre, Albrecht is on a team of other hand-picked artists competing with and against her.
“’The Voice’ brings the best talent from the entire country and I really went in wanting to collaborate with those people,” Albrecht said. “I’ve met incredible friends, the people on the show are the best people and I just feel so grateful to now be forever connected to all of them.”
Any given week Albrecht could be eliminated from the show based on her live singing performances, so in addition to wanting to win, she has the goal of increasing her audience base and eventually going on tour.
“I’m just continuing to invest in my art, my routine has really been focused on taking care of myself and making sure that I feel grounded,” she said. “At the same time, I’m doubling down on music. I’ve got this fire since being on the show and writing every day, producing and recording. I’ve got performances lined up here in LA so definitely on the music grind.”
The series is seen by millions of viewers, and her first singing battle on the show has been viewed 341,000 times on Instagram alone. With this comes an outpour of critical and constructive feedback from viewers, fans and the general public.
“I’m really a believer that there is a group of people that will resonate with my talent and so no matter what content I’m putting out there, it’s really authentic to me,” She said. “Everybody has different tastes so everything I create might not be everybody’s cup of tea but at the same time, there are some universal themes that I try to touch on. The positive feedback has really helped fuel me.”
After her time on the show, she hopes to take her confidence in herself and her career choices with her wherever she goes next.
“The outpouring of love has been truly one of the best parts of this whole experience,” Albrecht said. “I’m so grateful for all of them, it feels overwhelmingly joyful. What I hope to tell them is [to] stick around because there’s a lot more music to come. I really am passionate about creating music that people lyrically can relate to but also sonically. It’s the soundtrack for the range of emotions they feel, when you’re down [and] when you’re high. I really think my music can be there for all those moments.”
