This May, Ann Arbor transforms into a cinephile’s dream. From May 15 to 18, the much-anticipated Cinetopia Film Festival will dazzle with its buzzworthy films plucked straight from Cannes, Sundance and beyond.
Over the years, Cinetopia has premiered Oscar contenders, documentary gems and indie breakouts, making it a staple for anyone serious about cinema. Think of it as your personal passport to the world’s best cinema — without ever leaving town.
What’s playing?
This year’s schedule reads like a who’s who of festival favorites:

- Mr. Nobody Against Putin – A gripping look at one Russian teacher’s quiet defiance against state propaganda during the invasion of Ukraine. Playing Saturday, 5/17, at 2:45pm and Sunday, 5/18, at 12:30pm.
- From Cannes:
- Sister Midnight – This Bombay-set narrative blends horror, humor, and surreal drama to tell the story of an arranged marriage gone wildly off script. Playing Friday, 5/16, at 5:45pm and Saturday, 5/17, at 10pm.
- Local Favorites:
- Lady Parts – A sharp, heartfelt dramedy based on the true story of Ann Arbor’s own Bonnie Gross, who navigated a life-altering medical diagnosis with humor and resilience. Playing Thursday, 5/15, at 7:30pm and Friday, 5/16, at 9:30pm.
- Michigan-Made Shorts – Homegrown talent shines in a showcase of short films by Michigan filmmakers. Viewers can vote for their favorite to receive an audience award during the closing night party. Playing Sunday, 5/18, at 1pm.
