If you have a nut allergy in your family, you know they can be hard to avoid, especially while out and about. Though more options are available in grocery stores, it’s still something you need to pay attention to when you’re attending community events like the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market.
But now you have another tasty option: Sun Cycle Bakery, owned and operated by Matthew Whitfield. With a focus on nut-free cookies and breads, the bakery uses sunflower oil and seeds instead.

So far, this work has yielded five different products: two cookies, sweet challah, sunflower bread and focaccia.
Besides having a stall at the market, Whitfield, who is Deaf, has also sold cookies and breads for events for the Deaf community and at churches, festivals and other activities. Since it’s a small cottage food business, Whitfield is always working on expanding what Sun Cycle Bakery offers.
“I took the thought and ran with it and have been excited to hear feedback. I don’t have a team. It’s just me and my spouse and we roll up our sleeves,” he said.
If you need a batch of nut-free goodies for your next event, order online at suncyclebakery.com.
