The Ann Arbor Civic Theater is delighted for its upcoming production of “The Matchmaker,” a classic play by Thorton Wilder. This comedy is set to hit the stage from Oct. 19-22, offering audiences a chance to support live theater while enjoying a heartwarming performance.
The Ann Arbor Civic Theater is a community group dedicated to providing opportunities for local actors and promoting artistic growth through performances, open participation and development.
“The Matchmaker” serves as the source material for the musical “Hello Dolly.” Set in Yonkers, New York in 1905, the story revolves around the wealthy bachelor, Forrest MandorGelder, who makes the impulsive decision to find a wife. However, his quest takes an unexpected turn when he hires a matchmaker, unaware that she has her sights set on marrying him instead. The plot unfolds when his clerks decide to take the day off and venture into New York City.
Wendy Wright, a director with three decades of experience at the Ann Arbor Civic Theater and 18 productions under her belt, is at the helm of this exciting project. Expressing her enthusiasm for the upcoming show, Wright highlighted the unique charm of “The Matchmaker.”
“I like it because it’s funny. It’s very heartfelt. There’s a certain innocence to the piece that is so different from the world we live in today,” she said.
Rehearsals for the production began in August, with dedicated effort and passion poured into perfecting every aspect of the play. Wright’s previous directorial credits at the theater include “Barefoot in the Park” and “The Philadelphia Story.”
The cast of “The Matchmaker” boasts a diverse ensemble of actors, some hailing from Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas. Notably, Charlie Sutherland takes on the lead role, bringing with him an impressive 50 years of experience with the theater, making him a familiar face to Ann Arbor Civic Theater audiences.
The production promises to be a delightful blend of humor, romance and nostalgia, offering a reprieve from the demands of modern life.
When asked what audiences can expect from “The Matchmaker,” Wright encouraged everyone to attend.
“They should come to see it to support live theater and because it’s going to be a funny show,” she said.
The play will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20 and Saturday, Oct. 21, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22. The show will be located at the Arthur Miller Theatre at 1226 Murfin Ave, Ann Arbor.
General admission tickets are $24, with discounted prices of $22 for seniors and $15 for students.
Paid parking will be available as well.
