7 Mystery Writers from Ann Arbor

Looking for a chance to put your Sherlock skills to the test? Try a novel from one of these local mystery writers. These authors put their own spin on the classic whodunnit. From romance to crime drama, historical to paranormal, there’s something for every reader. 

R.D. Coppens

Coppens lives on a small farm in Southeast Michigan with his wife, Kathy. He is a singer, songwriter and storyteller who just released his second novel, The Scorpion’s Tale. This is the second book in the Dunville Mystery series, which takes place in Michigan’s countryside. The first novel in the series, The Mintern Report, was released in 2022. Coppen, a retired sales rep, enjoys traveling the country with his wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Rohn Alice Federbush

Federbush, a former University of Michigan administrator, received her master’s degree in Creative Writing from Eastern Michigan University. Specializing in mysteries, paranormal romance, and historical fiction, Federbush has written fifteen novels and many short stories. She has received several awards for her writing. Her most recent novel, Maui Time, is a romance mystery set in Hawaii. Federbush is also a painter that sells at local art fairs.

Linda W. Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald grew up in the Upper Peninsula, attended Northern Michigan University, and eventually received her master’s degree from the University of Michigan. Her first mystery, Death at the Doorstep, takes place in Ann Arbor.. Her follow up novel, A Superior Way to Die, will soon be released. This novel, which takes place in Marquette and Munising, continues the adventures of amateur sleuth Karin Niemi.

 

Pamela Gossiaux

Gossiaux is an international best selling author of romance and women’s fiction, as well as mysteries. With dual degrees in creative writing and English from the University of Michigan, she has worked in journalism for over twenty years. She resides on a horse farm in Michigan with her family and a menagerie of pets. Her Russo Romantic mystery series features three titles and a stand alone novella.

Charles Taylor

Taylor, a lecturer at the University of Michigan, has lived in Ann Arbor with his wife and children’s author, Debbie Taylor, for over thirty years. He is a self-professed film buff, music collector and avid golfer. He has written the thriller Dark Rhythm and the mystery Watching, which is set in Southeast Michigan.

Pete Tiernan

Tiernan had an extensive career in communications, working as a technical writer, landing in several ad agencies, and eventually working as a contributor to ESPN. He has published several books, including Boiler Beach and Unopened, both of which are family dramas with Michigan settings.

Claudia Whitsitt

Whitsitt has written four mysteries in her Samantha series, including the most recent, Inherited Issues. She is also a children’s author, and has written the award-winning historical fiction series, Kids Like You. As a former teacher, she enjoys speaking to local school children.
