If you’ve ever tried to find a reliable contractor, it usually starts with endless internet searches, vague estimates, and the occasional uncomfortable experience of having a stranger in your home.
We’ve rounded up a list of women contractors in the area to help make the process a little easier. If you’ve been putting off a project, or just want to be more intentional about who you hire, here’s where to start.
Full renovations and construction
Six Contracting Services
This Ann Arbor-based construction, design, and renovation firm is led by Viola Gowen. The company holds MWBE certification, meaning it is a certified minority- and women-owned business enterprise, reflecting both its ownership and its commitment to equitable business practices. It operates across residential and commercial projects.
Circe Builders
Charlie Kay founded this woman-owned remodeling company focused on renovations, additions and sustainable projects. Kay started her career as a home inspector, which gives her a distinct vantage point on what homes actually need versus what looks good on paper.

Wild Construction LLC
Ashley Wild of Wild Construction LLC handles kitchens, bathrooms, basement finishing, decks and smaller jobs. She works across all project sizes, which is less common than it sounds. For homeowners who want one contractor they can call back for different needs over time, that flexibility matters.
Simpson Signature Builds
Leslie Simpson covers the full range of residential remodeling. She brings over two decades of customer service experience to the work, and her approach is notable for keeping homeowners informed and involved throughout the process.
Handyman services
The Betty Brigade
Sharon McRill founded this business which offers home services including organizing, moving support and handyman subscription services. The range of services under one roof makes scheduling considerably easier, and the company was recently named one of Michigan’s 50 Companies to Watch.
Book a Butch
Book a Butch is run by a local queer contractor offering home repair, renovation and organization. The business was built around making home services more comfortable and accessible, particularly for clients who have felt uneasy having contractors in their space. The approach is hands-on and educational, with an emphasis on helping clients understand their own homes.

The Handy Wench
This business handles a wide range of residential repairs and improvements, from bathroom remodels to light electrical, painting and furniture assembly. “From installing a towel rack to building a greenhouse, I can do it,” owner Kelli Graves said.
Gardening and landscaping services
Just Weed It
This business was founded after years of gardening in Ann Arbor and recognizing a gap in the market for reliable, values-driven garden maintenance. Deb and her spouse Dorene note that diversity, equity and inclusion are central to how they operate. “We foster an inclusive, welcoming team that’s as colorful as a wildflower meadow. We groove with all backgrounds and perspectives, so that our employees and customers feel valued and respected.”
Turner Designs
Turner Designs is run by an MSU alum with a Bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture, translating her work into more design-forward outdoor spaces. Turner Designs is worth contacting if you want someone thinking about your yard as a whole rather than maintaining it.
Green building and energy efficiency
Ms. Green Construction
April Rue owns and runs this company that specializes in insulation, siding and building-science-based energy efficiency upgrades. Rue is OSHA-certified and a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. The firm has earned a reputation for honest assessments. “They talked me out of the most expensive insulation and told me why less pricey solutions would actually be better for me,” client Mark Thiesmeyer said.
Adaptive Building Solutions
Andrea Mahon co-runs this business with her husband Mike Mahon, a family-owned firm focused on green home building and remodeling with an emphasis on high-performance, sustainable construction. The team is well-suited for new builds or major remodels where efficiency is a priority from the start.

The businesses above represent a cross-section of what’s available locally from MWBE-certified firms to solo operators, from sustainable builders to same-day handyman calls. Supporting them is one of the more direct ways to keep dollars circulating within the community. Make sure to bookmark this list because you’ll probably need it!
